Eric’s New and Surprisingly Hot “Gossip Girl” Love Interest

*** Spoilers From Last Night’s Episode Ahead. ***

Last night’s Gossip Girl wasted no time in establishing that Eric van der Woodsen (of the famed Manhattan van der Woodsen’s) was single and back on the dating market. Over breakfast he asks stepsister and besty Jenny and stepfather Rufus for advice on a common Facebook quandary: Should he unfriend recent Japanese acquaintances Hidayo and Riyuke? "Hidayo was more than a friend," but Riyuke "has a fondness for group photos and bath houses."

So this is the sort of thing the Manhattan moneyed class discusses over breakfast! I was wondering. Everybody goes "yech!", so Eric hits unfriend on his Japanese bathhouse gayshas. But that leaves young master van der Woodsen all wistful. "Hidayo was supposed to be my rebound from Jonathan. Now I need a rebound from Hidayo." (And from Riyuke I’m guessing you might need treatment for crabs.)

We have to wait practically the entire episode before new rebound guy makes his "meet cute" entrance. In the interim, some other stuff goes on, all centered around a surprise birthday party for Nate. Oh hey, he’s dating Serena again? It’s been awhile since I’ve watched this show. Anyway, Serena is planning an assassin-themed party for him with the help of Blair‘s maid Dorota. But that scheming Little Jenny has her own plans for Nate and spends the episode trying to seduce him. Oh Little J, give it up! He’s much too pretty for you.

Meanwhile, Blair and Chuck are putting an ickier twist on the Indecent Proposal plot. (Is that even possible?) And Dan and Vanessa (Oh, they’re back together too! Yawn.) are doing some sort of dueling aspiring writers story – which I quickly fast forward through because hello! No one cares about writers!

Finally, towards the end of the episode the supporting characters get a little play. Dorota is proposed to by a hunky Russian doorman, and Eric literally falls down in the building’s lobby only to be picked up by a tall handsome stranger. Sparks fly. And they really do!

It’s just a short scene, but Eric and new mystery guy do seem to have some chemistry. In fact, their little meet cute is marred only by Eric’s unfortunate pointy cap, which makes him look like Hermey the Elf from Rudoph the Red Nosed Reindeer. So, you know, it’s hard to take him seriously.

Eric has to run off and play some minor supporting role in Little Jenny’s Nate-stalking drama, but he accidentally drops a Polaroid of himself and mystery guy picks it up, smiles, and pockets it.

Eric thinks he’s lost the guy forever, but mystery guy shows up at his penthouse door just as the birthday party is breaking up. Says Eric, "How’d you know what apartment I was in?"

"Well, I started on the first floor and worked my way up." Obviously mystery guy isn’t the sharpest crayon in the box – He might have just shown Eric’s Polaroid to the doorman and asked for directions.

Eric is charmed nonetheless, and they introduce themselves. New guy’s name is Elliot and while these two enjoy mutual smiles and a lingering handshake, Little Jenny spies and smirks from around the corner. Honestly, that little minx has to inject herself in every scene.

So, I don’t know about you guys, but I was pretty entertained by last night’s Gossip Girl, and I have high hopes for an Eric/Elliot storyline. Here’s hoping he’s not a con man. He did seem overly fixated on the fact that Eric lived in a penthouse.

FYI, Elliot is played by actor Luke Kleintank
