It’s no secret that around here we are huge fans of television writer Jane Espenson. After all, she’s been involved with some of TV’s most iconic shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Battlestar Galactica (she’s the reason that BSG had any gay content at all), and Torchwood. Jane was also a co-executive producer of Caprica, and was no doubt at least partly responsible for giving us the awesome Sam Adama (Sasha Roiz), and is also now writing for ABC’s Once Upon a Time, one of the fall TV shows we’re most looking forward to.
Jane is back with yet another project that has our antenna twitching — her brand new webseries Husbands starring Brad “Cheeks” Bell, Sean Hemeon and Alessandra Torresani. Husbands is about what happens when a just out of the closet baseball player (Hemeon) falls for a very … expressive gay guy (Bell) and the ensuing hijinks when they suddenly find themselves married. Let’s just say it makes big news.
I got a chance to visit the set of Husbands when I was in L.A. for the Television Critics Association. The series was shot in a hotel room in Beverly Hills and when I arrived, I expected to find a pretty low-key set-up. Maybe Jane, the actors, and someone to actually run the camera. Boy, was I wrong!
This thing has some serious firepower behind it and Jane had a full crew — a full-fledged director, make-up, wardrobe, lighting, set design — to work this puppy. At first I was thinking, “How did Jane get all of these folks to work on a webseries?” Then I remembered we’re talking about Jane Freakin’ Espenson. Who wouldn’t want to work with her?
Anyway, here are Jane, Brad and Sean taking a break from filming to do a little chat for AfterElton.com about making the series, what it’s about and much more! And after that, check out a sneak peek at the series which debuts September 13 at HusbandstheSeries.com.
