A Captive Ollie on “Arrow” and “Modern Family” Introduces Mitch’s Ex

Plus The IT Crowd returns, comparing Mad Men ads to what ran in the 60s and reasons to save Bunheads.

News

Deadline says that CBS will announce its first fall series today and order the comedy Mom, which stars Anna Faris as a newly sober single mom. The comedy also stars the faboo Allison Janney as Faris’ mother.

A wrap-up special of The IT Crowd will begin filming within a few weeks. The major players — Richard Ayoade, Chris O’Dowd, Katherine Parkinson and Matt Berry will all be back. At long last, I can stop turning my Xbox off and on again, hoping that will fix the problem of where Netflix doesn’t have any new IT Crowd episodes.

Vulture examines the state of ABC, which battles NBC for fourth place (depending on if you count NBC’s sports programming or not). It has some big hits, but it’s also struggling to use those hits to build the audience for new shows.

Business Insider intriguingly assembles ads from Mad Men and compares them to comparable ads from the same year. I’m not sure I agree with the attention-grabbing headline, which calls the SCDP ads “terrible.” Some are pretty bad in comparison to what was really being used, but a lot of the examples just show that Mad Men seems to miss what is actually happening with the brands its depicting.

Buzzfeed tries to keep the “Save Bunheads” mentality alive by listing ten reasons why the beloved ABC Family drama should be saved. I somehow managed to forget the joy of seeing Godot shirtless.

With the success of Hatfields & McCoys and The Bible, Deadline says we should expect to see a lot more “limited series” announced. It’s not a return to traditional mini-series, since most of these projects will keep the actors committed to appearing in more seasons. These limited series will introduce shorter seasons and a season-long story arc. At least, that’s the intention.

The Americans promoted two actors for its second season — Alison Wright and Annet Mahendru who play Martha and Nina, respectively. At the very least, it should be interesting to see how things continue to build with those characters.

CBS is still trying to negotiate a ninth season of Criminal Minds, trying to extend the cast’s contracts. However, Kirsten Vangsness and A.J. Cook may end up quitting the show, according to Deadline. The two have long been paid less than their male colleagues and are insisting on a little equality in pay if the popular actors will stay with the series.

The Today’s Show‘s Natalie Morales joins Anderson to meet a boy who is allergic to food.

The Rachael Ray Show (syndicated) Check local listings
Kyan Douglas is back to give a makeover to the mom of Vinny from Jersey Shore.

Days of Our Lives (NBC) Check local listings
I don’t think WilSon is on today’s episode, but it does have Sami trying to get her hands on the evidence against Will. Meanwhile, Gabi gets another occasion to wonder what’s going on between Nick and Vargas..

Nature (PBS) Check local listings
Night vision cameras helps understand the details of the white-tailed deer and how it lives. Based on the grumbling of one friend, the answer probably involves eating all the desirable plants in a yard.

Nova (PBS) Check local listings
Everyone has to have a hobby and Nova follows two scientists who collect venom from the world’s deadliest species. I guess that collection does a lot more good for the world than my complete run of The Invisibles.

Arrow, "Darkness on the Edge of Town"

Arrow (CW) 8:00 PM ET
Oh. Yes. Finally. With this being the season’s penultimate episode, Arrow finally delivers a scene that combines Stephen Amell shirtless with Malcolm‘s (John Barrowman)’s villainy. Do we need a plot outside of that scene?

The Middle (ABC) 8:00 PM ET
Brad is back this week as Sue deals with the jealousy she feels about her friends getting their driver’s license while she keeps failing her test.

 Modern Family, "My Hero"

Modern Family (ABC) 9:00 PM ET
We get to met Mitch‘s ex-boyfriend, Teddy tonight. That leaves Cam flustered and since he’s played by Larry Sullivan, wouldn’t you feel like you have a lot to live up to if your partner were a doctor who looked like Larry Sullivan? Oh, and the whole family is meeting Teddy because he’s invited them to a fundraiser at a roller rink. That’s right, we’ve got Mitch’s love life and roller skating Pritchetts in the same episode! At least, there had better be roller skating Pritchetts. If they spend an episode being those people who spend all the time watching other people skate.

Supernatural (CW) 9:00 PM ET
Sam and Dean prepare for the third trial with a film they find in the Men of Letters’ files. I hope it’s done in the style of 1950s PSAs like “Boys Beware“. We need a good laugh before the finale.

 Supernatural, "Clip Show"

Million Dollar Listing New York (Bravo) 10:00 PM ET
When the classic Million Dollar Listing became more like other Bravo reality shows, we stuck around for Madison, but ended up getting sucked into the whole show. Similarly, the spin-off lured us in with former gay adult film performer Fredrik Eklund, but we got sucked into the rest of the show. This season, a new realtor, Luis steps in between Fredrik and Ryan‘s rivalry. That probably means irksome behavior as Luis tries to get the cameras’ attention, but we’ll overlook it if Ryan continues to let the cameras follow him into the shower.

Off Pitch (VH1) 10:00 PM ET
When a member of the Grand River Singers can’t make the performance, Rob has to quickly step in and learn the song and choreography. That would be a great time for someone from Glee to show up, roll their eyes and say they have to lean several routines every week.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (NBC) 12:35 AM ET
I love it when Rachel Maddow visits Jimmy, especially when it leads to her mixing a strong cocktail that Jimmy can’t handle. Whether tonight’s show includes a cocktail moment or not, a chat with Zachary Quinto will help ensure a great show.

What will you be watching tonight? Please share in the comments!
