Coming out as HIV+, is PrEP for you, Toys ‘R Us to end gender specific marketing
Mark Salling is set to star in the television movie Rocky Road for Up. He’ll be playing a Wall Street big shot who gets downsized and moves back to New Hampshire, where he takes a job at his father’s ice cream business. Scott Thompson of Kids In the Hall fame will star as his priest.
Queerty gives us Ten Reasons to Be Glad Wrestling Is Back In the Olympics, and all ten of those reasons are clad in clingy, bulging singlets. I really wish I’d tried out for the wrestling team in high school.
Yesterday I mentioned, perhaps prematurely, that Michael Jordan’s daughter Jasmine had come out as a lesbian. She’s since responded to that assessment. “Until love, trust, honesty, respect, loyalty, commitment, genuine happiness and other characteristics or aspects I want in a relationship is defined by one gender then and only then will I discuss my sexual preference.”
IndieWire has a bone to pick with Dallas Buyers Club. They find the movie generally bad, have an issue with the homophobia of the main character, and take issue that the first major movie with AIDS front and center since Philadelphia has a straight lead, among other things.
Anti-gay crusader Scott Lively wants to prevent any pro-gay protests using the rainbow flag at the Olympics by striking first. “”The rainbow belongs to God and was created by Him as a symbol of His authority over creation. However, with a simple judo move, the Russians could catch the ‘gays’ in their own trap, and at the same time rescue God’s rainbow from being dragged through the mud. Imagine the Russian Olympics taking place under a giant rainbow banner declaring that the rainbow belongs to God! And rainbow symbols incorporated in virtually every aspect of the games and the celebrations surrounding them. The scheme to display rainbows as a rebellious act by Hollywood celebrities, and left-leaning Olympic contenders would be rendered impotent. The ‘gay’ movement would be thwarted in its attempt to steal for itself what belongs to God and to all of us as His children. And, best of all, the entire world, including the ‘gays,’ would be reminded of the truth of the Bible: that God gave us the rainbow as a reminder not only that He judges sin, but that He forgives and heals those who repent.” Not if we make sure there’s always a same sex couple kissing under your banner every time the camera cuts to it.
If taking Truvada as PrEP to prevent HIV is so effective, why aren’t more gay men doing it? Studies show we use condoms less than half the time, so wouldn’t a little prevention that is 99% effective go a long way towards curbing new infections? Is the shaming of admitting we don’t use condoms keeping us from an effective barrier to coming down with the disease, our own version of slut shaming? I admit, as someone who uses Truvada as part of their HIV treatment regimen, I have a lot of mixed feelings about this. Building a resistance to the drugs is one of my constant worries, and Truvada is part of most major cocktails. Why hasten that? But then again, why not take every possible step to prevent becoming positive in the first place?
Speaking of shame, this week’s Civil Behavior covers how to come out as HIV+, which to me is a lot harder than coming out as gay. There’s a lot of stigma with being positive, and much of it within the gay community. For years I was out to close family and a few people I’d known for decades, mostly those to act as a support system to my worried mother. I’m still not out as HIV+ to my day job, although since I’m out here, someone will eventually find out. One could say I’m fairly open, writing for thousands every day, but by default, I don’t tell people, even if they’ve been in my life for years. So how, and why, do you tell them? And how should you react if someone tells you they’re positive? Let me just pull out one reaction I never want to hear – “I’m sorry.” Don’t ever say that. I’m not dying, it’s not new, and I’m done being sad about it.
Dallas Police have informed Pride that they will start enforcing indecent exposure and lewd conduct rules at the event, and many people aren’t happy. Granted, we’ve traditionally gotten a pass on the rules this one day (which seems only fair for living as a gay man in Texas, honestly), but we do have to remember that we’re part of civil society, and there are rules. So if you’re going to dance on a float with an erection, please make sure your Speedo isn’t transparent when wet.
Well, this was one style of purification my pastor never tried on me.
Toys R Us is going to stop gender-specific marketing of toys. Advertising will move gender neutral, with girls playing with guns (no mention of boys playing with Barbies), and they’ll begin removing gender references in the stores, like the pink aisles for girls.
Chronicle writer Max Landis is reportedly pitching an idea for a Wonder Woman movie to Warner Bros. Can we finally get a movie? Why is this so complicated. Plus, DC is so behind on the movie exploitation of their characters, one way they could jump out in front is to deliver a female superhero lead before Marvel does it.
