Meme: Gene Roddenberry Knew George Takei Was Gay During “Star Trek,” Justice Kennedy Denies Motion On Prop 8 Stay, Putin Signs Gay Propaganda Law

David Boies stretches DOMA ruling, Rachel Maddow slaps Rep. Jim DeMint around, Christian Broadcasting Network reveals the Gay Agenda.

SterekWe see a lot of arguments on this site about queerbaiting in television shows (most frequently with shows with out creators). But is it a problem? Twenty years ago, we were thrilled by subtext. Now we expect more – and we should. But how do you solve a problem as old as television itself?

As expected, Monsters University dominated the box office. But The Heat took in $40 million, while the big budget White House Down disappointed with only $26 million. Does this mean that we need to stop blowing everything up and maybe try and laugh every once in a while?

I mean, even Steven Spielberg thinks that Hollywood has a blockbuster problem. And since he basically invented the blockbuster, shouldn’t we pay attention to him? I’m not just saying that because I want a movie I’d actually like watch to I'm So Excitedcome to my local theater.

On the independent side of the box office, Pedro Almodovar’s decidedly queer I’m So Excited turned out a $20,600 per screen average, and was the clear winner.

Universal Studios Orlando is building Cabin In the Woods in time for their Halloween celebration this year. “We are building the cabin completely. You’re going to walk through a forest to get there. You’re going into the cabin. You’re going to go into the cube cells. We’re literally taking everything we can in the film and giving you a kind of best-of montage of the film with this kind of linking story. You’re going to be in the control room when merman attacks.”George Takei

George Takei says that Gene Roddenberry knew he was gay when he did Star Trek, as did most of the cast and crew. “Some of the cast and creatives were aware that I was gay, and I did, on occasion, bring a male date to parties. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry was aware of my sexual orientation and very supportive. That was the extraordinary thing about Star Trek. That we were a diverse crew of people representing so many colors, backgrounds and heritages. That was the promise of the future. And, now, in the J.J. Abrams reboot, an openly gay actor is playing a Vulcan in love with an African American. I’m not really surprised by this. Star Trek taught us to look ahead to a time where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s dream was fulfilled. Being a part of that vision was — and has remained — a tremendous honor.

The emergency petition to the Supreme Court to stop the stay from being lifted on marriage equality in California has been denied by Justice Kennedy without comment. Kennedy manages appeals from the Ninth Circuit, but was also one of the justices that Jennifer Lopezvoted so that Prop 8 had standing to be heard.

Jennifer Lopez performed at a birthday dinner for the Turkmenistan leader. Turkmenistan is known for huge gas reserves and terrible human rights violations. Now Lopez is saying that she was invited to perform by the state-run gas company, and tossed in the Happy Birthday Mr. President at the last minute as a courtesy, and ”Had there been knowledge of human right issues of any kind, Jennifer would not have attended.” Expect her to make a large donation matching her fee to Amnesty International in the coming days, since that’s how these things normally work. She really needs to hire someone who knows how to use Google.Vladimir Putin

Vladimir Putin has signed the law banning gay propaganda from being given to minors, but he insists his country isn’t anti-gay. “I want everyone to understand that in Russia there are no infringements on sexual minorities’ rights. They’re people, just like everyone else, and they enjoy full rights and freedoms.”

There are at least five different standards that the federal government uses to decide if you’re married. The military uses where you were married as the standard (probably best for a career that requires forced moves), while the IRS and Social Security look at state of residence. Some agencies look at where you lived when you were married. And some use the loose standard “applicable state law,” while others use “jurisdiction with most significant interest.” So it’s theoretically possible as things stand for a same-sex couple to be married according to the military, not Paula Deenmarried to the IRS and so on. This will take a while to sort out.

Is Paula Deen worse than Alec Baldwin? Probably. Not that we should be happy with either of them right now. And you’re probably not going to like the primary reason why she’s worse.

As marriage equality begins to roll on its own momentum to a degree, perhaps it’s time to turn back to the forgotten fight of the GLBT movement, the fight against HIV and AIDS? “The nation’s largest gay rights groups do almost no programmatic work on HIV/AIDS. The words “HIV” and “AIDS” don’t even appear in the most recent annual reports from the big three: the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF). By contrast, the Cornell University Library’s collection includes 23 boxes of NGLTF documents from the 1980s and ’90s outlining the group’s AIDS work.

If you’re going to get gay married, you need to plan. Which one of these ten best cars to get gay married in are you going to use?Roseanne Barr

NBC is looking at the 10/90 model for a new sitcom from Roseanne Barr, written by out Nurse Jackie creator Linda Wallem. The 10/90 model has been employed a lot on cable, with a successful run of 10 episodes triggering an automatic order for 90 more episodes, but has never been employed on broadcast television.

The dominoes begin to fall as a federal court in Michigan has struck down a ban on domestic partner benefits, citing the DOMA ruling.
