French President François Hollande boycotting Sochi, Pope Francis fights back against Marxist charges, has Elvis been reincarnated in the body of a sixteen year old French Canadian?
The great Peter O’Toole has passed away at the age of 81. An eight time Oscar nominee with a career that spanned over 50 years, O’Toole is perhaps best known for Lawrence of Arabia, but continued to churn out movies until his retirement in 2012.
French President François Hollande will not be attending the Sochi Games, nor will any high ranking French government officials. He did attend the London Games. No reason was given, but given his politics the human rights issues in Russia are the most likely cause. The United States is yet to announce their official delegation. Denying Russia the pomp of world leaders is starting to feel like a very nice protest. Hit them in their ego.
Paul Dini, who has worked on Tiny Toon Adventures, Batman: The Animated Series and Tower Prep says that studios making cartoons and superhero shows don’t want girls as viewers – because they don’t buy toys. “That’s the thing, you know I hate being Mr. Sour Grapes here, but I’ll just lay it on the line: that’s the thing that got us cancelled on Tower Prep, honest-to-God was, like, ‘we need boys, but we need girls right there, right one step behind the boys’—this is the network talking—’one step behind the boys, not as smart as the boys, not as interesting as the boys, but right there.’ And then we began writing stories that got into the two girls’ back stories, and they were really interesting. And suddenly we had families and girls watching, and girls really became a big part of our audience, in sort of like they picked up that Harry Potter type of serialized way, which is what The Batman and [indistinct]’s really gonna kill. But, the Cartoon Network was saying, ‘F***, no, we want the boys’ action, it’s boys’ action, this goofy boy humor we’ve gotta get that in there. And we can’t—’ and I’d say, but look at the numbers, we’ve got parents watching, with the families, and then when you break it down—’Yeah, but the—so many—we’ve got too many girls. We need more boys.’”
Human Rights First has written to the Obama administration to ask that they include prominent GLBT activists and athletes in their official delegation. We urge you to ensure that the U.S. delegation include prominent LGBT people – athletes, government officials and others – as well as allies of the LGBT community who will carry a message of tolerance and respect for individual rights and human dignity.”
Google, who has the motto “Do No Evil” has snapped up military robotics contractor Boston Dynamics. While the Goog says it has no interest in becoming a military contractor, they will honor existing contracts.
Distinc.tt is billing itself as the only gay social networking application approved by the Apple store for users 12 and up. The app doesn’t focus on sex, but instead on events, places, and basically what’s known as “cool hunting” under the assumption that gay people know what’s cool first. Their tag line is “Finally, an LGBT app that you can bring home to Mom!”
At the other end of the spectrum is PinGay, which is like Pinterest, but for gay porn. Images, videos, you name it, you can pin it, follow people, re-pin (which sounds dirty in this context) all your favorites, and put it out there to share for others who share your particular interests.
In the wake of the success of Frozen, Disney has announced Moana. The main character will be Moana Waialiki, a sea voyaging enthusiast, and the only daughter of a chief in a long line of navigators. When her family needs her help, she sets off on an epic journey. The film will also include demi-gods and spirits taken from real mythology.”
Last year the Oklahoma legislature, the poster children for “unintended consequences” decided to put a monument of the Ten Commandments on state grounds. Doing so of course opened up the grounds for other religious viewpoints, and now Satanists are raising money for their own monument.
Catholic bishops in Indiana have affirmed their commitment to “traditional marriage” but have stopped short of endorsing a constitutional amendment banning equality, deciding to remain neutral in the debate, which should be seen as a huge victory.
While Pope Francis never named Rush Limbaugh, he did take some time to address charges that he was a Marxist. “The Marxist ideology is wrong. But I have met many Marxists in my life who are good people, so I don’t feel offended [to have been called a Marxist]. There is nothing in the Exhortation that cannot be found in the social Doctrine of the Church. I wasn’t speaking from a technical point of view, what I was trying to do was to give a picture of what is going on. The only specific quote I used was the one regarding the ‘trickle-down theories’ which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and social inclusiveness in the world. The promise was that when the glass was full, it would overflow, benefiting the poor. But what happens instead, is that when the glass is full, it magically gets bigger nothing ever comes out for the poor. This was the only reference to a specific theory. I was not, I repeat, speaking from a technical point of view but according to the Church’s social doctrine. This does not mean being a Marxist.”
