Andrew Garfield to host SNL, Linda Harvey helpfully advises teens to stay in closet.
Outsports has been going out of their way to remind people watching The Masters that golfer Bubba Watson isn’t the aw-shucks guy he seems to be. Speaking about Jason Collins, Bubba said “I’m not saying I’m better than anybody else. I’m not saying he’s wrong, I’m saying I love him. If he called me right now and said, ‘Hey,’ or any person that was gay called me, I’d go to dinner with them any time. It’s just my belief system on the Bible says you can’t be gay. That’s a sin. So somebody living in sin I believe to be wrong.” Those statements broke my golf-watching, Bubba-loving mom’s heart.
John Waters, the anti-gay Irish journalist who got €40,000 out of Irish broadcaster RTE after Panti Bliss slammed him as a bigot says he’s afraid to go out in city center in Dublin now, because people say mean things to him. “I won’t go in to Dublin city centre at night. When you have that kind of toxicity generated out of nothing, what are you going to do? It’s not worth it.” “I was walking down the street and a guy on a bicycle shouted ‘you f***ing homophobe’ at me before cycling on. I was in a coffee shop on another occasion and a woman waddled over to me with a pram and told me I should be ashamed of myself before walking off. They are cowards, they shout something and keep walking, they don’t want to engage.”
One tradition I miss about Easter is decorating and hiding eggs. All the kids in my family have outgrown it. But in case yours haven’t, here are some cool (and some very artsy and grown up) ways to decorate eggs.
When Pharrell was on Ellen last week (as opposed to the sound system in my gym, causing me to dance embarrassingly between sets), he expressed strong support for equality. “We’re a species that has a space station floating above the Earth for 20 years. We even have a rover on the surface of Mars. How can we be the same species that is telling people… we have legislators and legislation in places, in certain places that tells women what they can and cannot do with their bodies. How is that possible? When I say equality, I mean equality for everybody. Who are you telling who they can marry and who they can’t? What is this? This is 2014.”
Andrew Garfield will celebrate the opening of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 by hosting Saturday Night Live with musical guest Coldplay.
Hepatitis C is a terrible disease affecting the liver, with no cure, until now, and is often associated with HIV infections. A new cure is out from Gilead called Sovaldi, which is 96% effective after 24 weeks of treatment. The problem is that Gilead, much as they do with their HIV treatments, wants a hefty penny. Actually, they want $1,000/pill in the U.S., meaning a treatment will cost north of $80,000.
Here’s a handy tool that will tell you how much time you’ve wasted watching a particular show. I really don’t want to know, personally (my cartoon watcher would rival the biggest stoner), but for those of you in fandoms, I can see a new way to compete for biggest fan.
In a correction from Saturday, Captain America: The Winter Soldier managed to win the weekend with a huge Saturday boost, adding $41 million, while Rio 2 picked up second place with $39 million.
Do USA Network’s shows upset the classic social order? Women aren’t sex objects and are valued team members, homophobia doesn’t exist even in macho settings, and a gay actor can play a daring rogue.
Linda Harvey is still shilling her book Maybe He’s Not Gay by telling gay youth they just don’t know themselves. “They do not need to come out to everyone. That’s the beginning of many troubling roads for many young people when they announce it and they feel like they have to live up to that, or down to that. Be patient with yourself. Lots and lots of people have changed out of this lifestyle. And some have done it through Christian faith; others have done it as they mature. You shouldn’t be involved in sexual relations anyway.” Man, does she demonstrate a grasp of teenagers or what?
The Republican Party in Nevada has dropped opposition to marriage equality and abortion rights in their official party platform. Chairman Michael McDonald says “I think it was about inclusion, not exclusion. This is where the party is going.”
Jack Antonoff, best known as the singer for fun., but also dating Lena Dunham, also runs The Ally Coalition for LGBT rights. He’s aware that could come off as “straightsplaining” but feels he can do good work. “Unless you are a white male who’s had the most privileged existence of all time and never had anyone make fun of you — which I can’t really imagine is anyone besides, I don’t know, fucking Rick Santorum — you’ll be able to give a shit about what’s going on.”
Carl Siciliano of the Ali Forney Center in New York published an open letter in the New York Times inviting Pope Francis to visit the youth in his shelter. “The Roman Catholic Church is the largest and most influential Christian organization in the world. By teaching that homosexual conduct is a sin, and that the homosexual orientation is disordered, it influences countless parents and families in societies across the globe to reject their children. In the name of these children, and in light of the love and compassion at the heart of the message of Jesus, I ask that you end this teaching.”
Parker Young demonstrates that those muscles of his aren’t just for looks.
The less said about Saturday Night Live this week the better. It actually made me feel sorry for Seth Rogen, which I didn’t know was possible. One thing stood out for me though, and that was Ed Sheeran. I’m not exactly sure what I was anticipating from him musically, but “Don’t” was a lot more contemporary than I was expecting. I’m so used to seeing him playing acoustic songs, this kind of blew my mind.
