Surprising probably no one, Neil Patrick Harris received a Tony tonight for his performance in the Broadway revival of Hedwig & the Angry Inch. Just earlier he had performed a number from the musical in which he launched into the audience, sat in Kevin Bacon‘s lap, terrorizing Sting and others in the front row. But the biggest reaction to the number came when he leaned out over the stage and planted a big, close-up kiss on partner David Burtka. The audience erupted in applause.

No doubt a Million Moms letter writing campaign is already in the works. They were probably already scandalized by Alan Cumming‘s seemingly endless treasure trail — on display during his performance of a number from Cabaret.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch also received a Tony for Best Revival of a Musical, and Harris’ co-star Lena Hall took home the Tony for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical for her role as ‘Yitzhak’

Another of the night’s big wins was for Audra Mcdonald who took home a Tony for Best Performance By an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her performance as Billie Holiday in “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.” This is McDonald’s sixth Tony, something no other performer has ever accomplished in competitive categories. (The late Julie Harris received six Tonys – but the last was a lifetime achievement award.)
