The World Outgames wrapped up in Copenhagen over the weekend, with hundreds of gay athletes from around the world competing for glory and gold.
The United States led the final medal count with 351, followed by Germany with 231, the Netherlands with 214, Denmark with 164, and Canada with 121 (click here for a full medal count).
Unfortunately the event was marred by two homophobic attacks; a street bashing after the opening ceremonies, and a few days later a track and field runner was injured in a bomb attack (which somehow became downplayed into “someone threw some firecrackers”).
By all accounts the event went smoothly, but according to Jim Buzinski from Outsports.com, the future of the World Outgames could be in serious doubt due to the global recession and the large drop-off in attendance this year.
Hopefully this union of athletic spirit and pride will be able to continue, but in the meantime enjoy this gallery of world-class sportsmen … okay, it’s mostly beefcake shots, but try to enjoy it anyway.
