Revenge‘s bisexual high tech multimillionaire Nolan Ross has been involved with both men and women during the ABC series’ first two seasons. But there’s definitely a camp of viewers (among them, readers of TheBacklot) who preferred his first season liaison with dastardly Tyler (Ashton Holmes) to his relationship with accounting underling Padma (Dilshad Vadsaria). Lovely as Padma was, many viewers were disappointed Nolan chose her over former lover Marco (EJ Bonilla).
Season 3 of the frothy prime time soap is not arriving on our televisions until September 29th, but we recently grabbed some time with actor Gabriel Mann (a.k.a. Nolan) and some of the Revenge creative team at the ABC Television Critics Association cocktail party. We wanted to find out which direction Nolan’s libido will be pointing this season as well as what’s in store for some of our other fave Revenge characters. Read on…
“I tend to think, as in life, that whenever the pendulum swings one way,” Mann told us, “it tends to swing back the other way equally so.” In other words, Nolan may have been moony-eyed over Padma last season but don’t expect the same when the new episodes arrive.
In fact, Mann hints that his quick witted character may not be looking for love at all. Lust, however? That’s another story. “I’m not going to say love is dead for Nolan,” he said, “but he’s certainly not trying to learn names at this point.” Joking (or not, perhaps?) Mann added we shouldn’t be surprised if “Nolan has bought stock in Grindr.”
Executive Producers Aaron Harberts & Gretchen J. Berg confirmed that Nolan will be with men this season and teased it’ll be a fun ride, so to speak. “We cannot tell you who he’s going to be with, but it’s sort of a delicious reveal,” Harberts teased adding that Nolan “uses some of Emily’s revenge-y techniques to learn more about his beau.” And while we don’t know if lust will turn into love at some point in the season, it would seem to be it be ill-advised to expect a happily ever after story. “Nolan always has trouble in love,” Harberts said, “and this is no exception.”
Mann also dubbed the upcoming new episodes as ‘Hashtag Sexy Season Three’ as it sounds as though we’ll be seeing a lot of skin from a lot of the cast members. “We’ve got a not-unattractive cast,” he marveled, “and I think there are a lot of classes of revenge to explore and I feel like it’s time to explore sexual manipulation across the board.”
Noting the differences with last season, the actor shared, “Season Two was very dark and very chaste, and I feel like we have this kind of back-to-basics approach to [head] out of the boardroom and back to the beach. Clothes are coming off, as they should.” And the actor said the cast has been working hard so they’re all prepared for some disrobing. “I think between seasons we spent our time doing calorie counts and carb intakes and who got what brand of protein. It’s between the set and the trainer at this point.”
And a new diva alert could be sounding with the character of Charlotte (Christa B. Allen), who lost her true love Declan (Connor Paolo) at the end of last season and is going to look – and act – very different in season three “We’re changing Charlotte’s look,” Harberts said. “She’s going to be a little more aggressive. She’s spent some time in Europe so she comes back with a more worldly attitude and you’re going to see this season that she shares a lot of DNA with [sister] Emily (Emily VanCamp) because she’s going to be doing a little revenging of her own.”
Berg also added that Charlotte’s new grown-up state may bring her to become the voice of reason in the oft-bumpy romance between Emily and [half-brother] Daniel (Josh Bowman). “With Daniel, who [Charlotte] continues to be close with, she looks at his relationship with Emily with different eyes and she wants her brother to be happy,” Berg explained. “And sometimes she’s like ‘Wait a minute. Emily said she’s going to be here and she’s not here. Where is she? Is that the best thing for you, Daniel, being treated like that?’”
And what of the always-feuding Victoria (Madeleine Stowe) and Conrad (Henry Czerny)? “Let’s just say Conrad has his own suite this year, which we’ll see,” Harberts revealed. “They’re going to be like a lot of rich, married couples who’ve been together a long while in a giant mansion. They’ll be occupying different wings but they will always be together to cause some trouble.”
But back to our favorite Revenge bisexual…will Nolan, who was heading for prison in the second season finale, be sporting orange prison garb instead of a speedo by the pool when the new season kicks off? “I would say we definitely see Nolan in orange,” Mann said. “Whether that’s prison or something else you’ll have to watch.”
Viewers may get the best of both worlds, though, because when asked a true/false question about whether or not we will see Nolan in a speedo sometime in the new season, Mann smiled and revealed, “Not in the season premiere…but true.”
Revenge returns for Season Three on September 29th at 9pm on ABC.
