The 2014 Oscar Nominations: Sound Off!

BLUE-JASMINE

The Oscar nominations are out, and you have some tough truths to explain to your kids. For instance, Emma Thompson is not an Oscar nominee for her work in Saving Mr. Banks, but Jonah Hill is now a two-time Oscar nominee thanks to his newest nod for The Wolf of Wall Street. Surely the biggest surprise is that Robert Redford was snubbed for All Is Lost in favor of Christian Bale in American Hustle, which should upset anyone who likes believable human beings in movies. And of course: That underdog of underdogs Oprah Winfrey was snubbed in favor of Sally Hawkins in Blue Jasmine, which is actually no surprise considering Lee Daniels’ The Butler tumbled from contention months ago and Hawkins was overlooked rather famously for her well-received starring role in Happy Go Lucky.

Though I’d really have liked to see Oscar Isaac also make this tally, I’m mostly a fan of these nominations. It seems like my two favorite performances of the year, Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine and Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club, are going to run off with wins.
