The Glee Project Recap: Adapt, Evolve or Be Dismissed!

This week was full of surprises, so let’s get right to it …

Some highlights of this week’s episode, “Adaptability”

Aylin & Charlie: “Let’s hug it out!”

The week begins with Aylin and Charlie deciding to put their budding flirtation aside and focus on the competition. Good idea when you’re on a televised reality competition. They seal the deal with an awkward brother-sister type hug/shove.

Mentor/casting director Robert Ulrich announces that this week’s theme is adaptability, something a performer on Glee will need in spades.

Michael (center) intends to shine this week

Michael is very excited because he thinks this theme will help him be more spontaneous and stop overthinking his performances. Mario thinks he’ll do well with the theme, while Lily isn’t thrilled about it. Then all of the contestants find out that they have to sing the song solo. Gasp!

The group’s “Homework Assignment” is a performance of Alanis Morrisette’s alleged vocal takedown of Dave Coulier, “You Oughta Know,” which is so appropriate for this group of young people, you know?

Robert introduces guest mentor Kevin McHale to the kids

Week 5’s guest judge is … Kevin McHale, Glee’s Artie Abrams, who Robert describes as very adaptable. Ali is very interested to see Kevin, because she carefully watches the show each week to see if he moves his legs while in the wheelchair. Amazingly, she says he never has.

Aylin emerges as the homework winner and wins a one-on-one mentoring session with Kevin McHale and a stand-out role in the group’s video performance of …

Jessie J’s “Price Tag” — which the contestants don’t’ find out until they get into the studio with mentor/vocal coach Nikki Anders. The surprise actually upped the game for many of the contestants. Aylin shined again, but Abraham had problems with pitch and timing.

For yet another curveball, the gang must learn choreography with Zach Woodlee on set for the video, which has a mean, rich kids vs. broke kids story. Blake struggles with his moves, flailing his arms a bit, while Mario is not giving video director Erik White what he needs. Surprise, his ego got in the way … again! And Charlie makes yet another bizarro acting choice by deciding to stay in (douchey) character all day. Meanwhile Marlon Brando spins in his grave.

Last surprise of the night: the mentors pick the six lowest-rated competitors, who are paired to perform three duets for Ryan Murphy and the mentors: Nelly and Blake sing the hell out of Foreigner’s “Waiting for a Girl/Boy Like You” (the mentors love it but want them to be just a little more aggressive), Ali and Abraham act like they’re having way too much fun taking on “Last Friday Night” by Katy Perry, and Mario and Charlie literally get touchy-feely, while singing “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” (much more awkward than the Aylin/Charlie hug that opened the show). With Abraham (not a good week for him!), Mario and Charlie in the bottom three, it was Mario’s swan song this week.
