Tom Gabel, lead singer of the popular rock band Against Me!
The news must have come at a bit of a shock for many people. Against Me! lead singer Tom Gabel had only told a few family members and friends before announcing in The Rolling Stone yesterday that he would begin to live his life as a woman and would undergo gender reassignment surgery. Arguably, this marks the the first time that a major rock star has come out as transgender. (Although a case could be made that the distinction goes to Mina Caputo of Life of Agony).
Gabel plans to take the name Laura Jane Grace and will remain married to his wife, Heather.
Given that Against Me! is a folk rock band with a young, predominantly straight fan base, it will be interesting to see how this will impact their popularity.
So far, online response, both to the Rolling Stone article and elsewhere, seems to be relatively supportive and positive, with the haters being shouted down and many fans congratulating Laura Jane and wishing her well. The biggest concern seems to be how gender reassignment might impact the artist’s distinctive singing voice. You can check it out in the music video below.
Best wishes to Laura Jane Grace and her family.
