News

TV Guide writes a defense Of Sam Winchester for the Supernatural fans angry that he took a year off from hunting. Me, I’ve been off Team Dean ever since he killed Jewel Staite‘s character. No one messes with Kaylee.

Elizabeth Banks has booked a return appearance on Modern Family as Mitch and Cam‘s hard-partying pal, according to EW.

In today’s ‘technology gets creepy’ news, Yahoo! News notes that Verizon has filed a patent for a DVR that would record and watch the audience in addition to recording TV programs. The device would detect when viewers respond to a commercial and listen in on conversations to catch keywords to help identify relevant ads. This kind of thing is why my partner won’t allow a Kinect in the house.

Meanwhile, here’s your bit of schadenfreude for the day: New York Magazine says that Fox News is cutting back on how much airtime Karl Rove and Dick Morris get, with producers instructed to get permission before booking Rove or Morris for a show. According New York, Fox News boss Roger Ailes is frustrated with the way Rove’s election night reality-denying meltdown and Morris’ prediction of a landslide victory for Mitt Romney inspired so many jokes at Fox’s expense.

Mark your calendars, The Americans will debut on FX on January 30, bringing Matthew Rhys back to your TV screens.

Michael Richards has joined Kirstie Alley and Rhea Perlman as part of the cast of the TV Land pilot Giant Baby while Gilles Marini has been cast in a potential recurring role, according to Deadline. They’ll both play members of the household staff for Alley’s character, a Broadway star who meets the son she put up for adoption years ago. Richards will play her driver while Marini will play the chef.

Speaking of Seinfeld alumni, Jason Alexander is filming an appearance on Community.

Deadline reports that Bravo has ordered its first two scripted drama pilots — The Joneses based on the indie film of the same name about a suburban family who are secretly buzz marketers while Rita is a drama about a private school teacher.

I’m still trying to pretend this isn’t happening.

Last week’s Homeland may have driven critics crazy (Vulture explains why) but was the series most-watched episode and even beat Showtime’s former ratings champion, Dexter.

I don’t usually enjoy Meghan McCain‘s TV appearances (unless she’s talking with Thomas Roberts) but if she turns out to be a fan of Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 when it comes time to interview James Van Der Beek, I might suppress my urge to roll my eyes the next time she discusses politics.

The Grammy Nominations Concert Live! (CBS) 10:00 PM ET
why didn’t a TV network think of turning the Grammy nomination announcement into a TV concert special sooner? It makes so much sense ‐ and tonight’s special will have performances from Maroon 5, Fun and The Who.

American Horror Story (FX) 10:00 PM ET
Last season ended with a heartwarming Christmas episode, but we’re only at the midpoint of the season so we’ve got a deranged Briarcliff patient in a Santa hat played by Ian MacShane. That means I’ll be looking for excuses to yell “Swedgen!” at the screen in a Chinese accent. (That’s a Deadwood reference for all you fellow fans of the HBO Western.)
