“How I Met Your Mother” Meets Its Final Season, “Mad Men” Won’t Get a Spin-Off and Richard Coyle is a Pirate’s Assassin in “Crossbones”

NBC’s upcoming pirate drama Crossbones has mostly existed on my peripheral radar, but Coupling and Covert Affairs hottie Richard Coyle has been cast in the lead role, according to Deadline. He’ll play an assassin who infiltrates a pirate haven in order to kill Blackbeard.

Richard Coyle in Covert AffairsI swear, Richard Coyle was having a competition with Christopher Gorham for shirtless scenes
when he was on
Covert Affairs. Not that I minded.

I was lucky enough to see Ken Jeong‘s comedy act before he hit it big. Back then, he went by Dr. Ken and a lot of his comedy focused on his patients and the transition from medicine to comedy. I enjoy him on Community, but the Dr. Ken routine was a different side of Jeong and one I miss sometimes because it was also entertaining. That’s the long way of saying that I was pretty excited to see Deadline report that NBC is developing a comedy based on Jeong’s life when he was practicing medicine. The proposed sitcom is titled, apropriately enough, Dr. Ken.

ABC’s midseason drama Killer Women has been busy casting some killer women. Leverage alum Beth Riesgraf will play a decorator with a (presumably murderous) hobby on the side while The Office‘s Melora Hardin will play an abused wife whose husband pushes her to get different kinds of plastic surgery, at which point the killer women thing comes up. This one is starting to sound fun.

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner says there won’t be any Mad Men spin-offs, like Kevin Rahm‘s suggestion about a show following Ted Chaough in Los Angeles. Personally, I was hoping for a comedy about Bob and Joan‘s friendship, leading to the terrible revelation that Joan has a daughter that grows up to be Grace Adler.James Wolf from "Mad Men"Those thighs deserve a spin-off.

Bryan Signer is developing a drama for Syfy that starts with the clean-up after a “modern day ‘Kaiju’ monster” has attacked California and been stopped by a military effort.

According to a leaked story bible for Lost, producers promised ABC the show wouldn’t have a serialized structure, everything would have a scientific explanation, the smoke monster would be explained in the first few episodes and the show would be a “primitive Melrose Place” (except a not-serialized Melrose Place?) I think we’ve learned to be cynical about J.J. Abrams dramas now.

All things just keep getting better:

TNT has cancelled King & Maxwell after one season. Is it too early to send postcards saying “Ugly Betty reunion” to the producers of Devious Maids?

Like many short-lived shows with loyal fans, Copper producers would like to make a movie.

Bones (Fox) 8:00 PM ET
Booth and Brennan go undercover to a marriage counseling retreat. While John Ratzenberger is the big name guest-star, I’m much more excited about seeing Greg Rikaart away from Genoa City. (Also, if you haven’t been watching Bones and wondering what Pej Vehdat has been up to since Shameless, he’s been part of the Jeffersonian team.)

Greg RikaartGreg Rikaart wasn’t in any of the episode photos I found so I had to use this shirtless pic.
Sorry. I know you’re disappointed.

The Voice (NBC) 8:00 PM ET
After taking a season off, Christina Aguilera and Cee-Lo Green are back. We all expect the old dynamic is back, too.

How I Met Your Mother (CBS) 8:00 PM ET
For eight seasons, How I Met Your Mother played with storytelling techniques with varying degrees of success. Thus, it makes sense the final season would go big on playing with time by focusing the entire season on Barney and Robin‘s wedding. It may end up being another creative twist that pays off, it may be one final moment where HIMYM is too clever for its own good. Either way, we’ll get to see more of Wayne Brady as Barney’s gay brother James.

Sleepy Hollow (Fox) 9:00 PM ET
Its only the second episode and Sleepy Hollow is already pulling out the “Did you really think you saw the last of that character?” card. I hope that’s a sign of how crazy they plan to get.

Mom (CBS) 9:30 PM ET
From the creator of Grace Under Fire comes this comedy about a single mom who is a recovering alcoholic. This time, Anna Faris is the single mom who has to deal with her own mother (Allison Janney) who is an even bigger train wreck. Faris and Janney bring a whole lot of faboo to a show on their own and the cast gets even more promising with Nate Corddry (once again playing a restaurant manager having an inappropriate relationship with an employee), Matt Joes and that precocious kid from New Girl.

Hostages (CBS) 10:00 PM ET
Remember three months ago when CBS was getting ready to debut Under the Dome? The concept sounded like it should have a planned end date and it was described as a “limited series” — then we got dwindling-resource-of-the-week episodes and a renewal that promised it would keep trying to stretch the premise until viewers lost interest. Tonight they’re debuting another show with another premise that should be very finite. The family of a top surgeon is threatened if she doesn’t use an operation on the President as an opportunity to assassinate him. After Under the Dome, do we trust CBS with this premise? What if they distract us by having star Dylan McDermott take his shirt off? Maybe Toni Collette‘s character has a gay son on this show, too?

The Blacklist (NBC) 10:00 PM ET
A hammy bad guy helps a young and earnest FBI agent figure out dangerous criminals. Yeah, it sounds a lot like The Silence of the Lambs (from a network that already has Hannibal, no less!) but producers promise there’s more to the show. We’ll see, I guess.

The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (CBS) 12:35 AM ET
Jesse Tyler Ferguson is on tonight’s show. I hope Geoff isn’t angry if he didn’t get a wedding invite.

What will you be watching tonight? Please share in the comments!
